We love the people who discover ancient civilizations and bring light to our understanding of where we all came from.  Here are the 'Indiana Jones' folks we are proud to associate with. If you aren't already following their fascinating work, you can start here...

Like a character straight out of Indiana Jones

National Geographic Explorer Albert Lin is unlocking the secrets of lost cities from ancient civilizations. From the remote cave systems of Oman to the forgotten fortresses of Scotland, Lin and his team traveled to some of Earth's most hostile environments.

In the world of exploration and archaeology, LIDAR serves as an incredible tool, allowing researchers to uncover the secrets hidden beneath dense canopies. By using laser beams to penetrate the jungle and create detailed 3D maps, LIDAR has already unveiled lost cities and brought forgotten civilizations back into the light. As technology advances, we can only imagine the incredible discoveries waiting to be made in the depths of the jungle, thanks to the superpower of LIDAR.

LiDAR REVEALS LOST CITIES

WE BELONG TO THE LAND...

"Public Land is the only area it is legal for me to gather because I am a descendant. WA Fish & Wildlife only considers enrolled members of tribes "Indian" so, I cannot access inherent rights to hunt and fish in our territory except on Public Land..."

Off-Reservation Federal and State Lands
GIS Mapping of Indigenous Gathering Areas in the Northwestern United States

Geographic Information Systems or GIS is a helpful tool in accessing off-reservation public land in our territories with the current system of land ownership.

This map shows us the areas in red of human development that ended Salmon runs in the Columbia Basin the dark green is the areas in the watershed that had waterfalls preventing historical migration and light green all the paths salmon swam before dams.

The seasonal rounds reflect the 4 food chiefs and the seasons. This cycle begins with feasts to celebrate and pray for the harvest and gathering to start after this is done we won't gather until each of these feasts.

This Story Map will further be developed into a land access guide for members and descendants of the Colville Tribes. In the future I hope to include other Tribal Nations from the Plateau Region and have public and special access guidance for Salish, Ktunaxa and Sahaptin Peoples in interior WA, MT, ID and B.C.

𝙃𝙚𝙞ð𝙧's initial effort to discover The Indigenous, The Science and The Mythos as it pertains to The Map in our first CYA Series "Love in the Land of Giants'.  With each series, more cultures, locations and finds will be featured, allowing for a continuous population of the site. As we dig in, we'll show you the informative, cool stuff we find. In the meantime, we will add other Indigenous content, for a variety and clarification of our intention to represent all cultures as much and as quickly as possible.

If you would like to see a feature on a particular culture, please  contactus@heidr.org and we'll add it to our 'requested features' content!

Expedition Unknown
with Josh Gates

Josh Gates is an adventurer and explorer who crisscrosses the globe to investigate archaeological wonders. His wanderlust has taken him to over 100 countries – from sweltering African deserts to the icy shores of Antarctica. As the host of Discovery Channel’s smash-hit series Expedition Unknown, Josh takes viewers on thrilling quests in search of answers to the world’s greatest mysteries. Whether it is helping to uncover a 2,500-year-old mummy in Egypt, a lost temple at the Maya site of El Mirador, or participating in sub-sea archaeological excavations in the Mediterranean, Josh’s adventures reveal the ancient world to a vast global audience. In addition, he has scaled “the roof of Africa” on Mt. Kilimanjaro and climbed Aconcagua, the tallest mountain in the Americas. Josh holds a degree in Archaeology from Tufts University and is a member of The Explorers Club. He is a trustee on the governing board of the Archaeological Institute of America.

ORIGINS OF STONEHENGE

Host Josh Gates travels to his ancestral home of Great Britain to explore the origins of Stonehenge. From high in the air to deep under the sea, he finds an unexpected network of monuments that could have inspired one of history's most mystical locations.

In this episode of Digging for Britain, Professor Alice Roberts, Dr Naoíse Mac Sweeney and the team investigate a series of extraordinary finds. Archeologists explore a fortified Roman settlement in East Sussex, an 8,000-year-old mesolithic settlement submerged underwater off the Isle of Wight and an Iron Age burial near Dorchester.

Arctic Circle and Ireland

The Adventure Series 1: Love in the Land of Giants takes place in the Arctic Circle and Ireland. Featured content will reflect this, and change for Series 2.

The Arctic region is of global importance due to the escalating impact of climate change, emerging economic opportunities and geopolitical dynamics These changes in the Arctic affect Ireland because of its proximity to the region and its location in the North Atlantic. Despite being on a Northern periphery, Ireland lacks a transparent model for its involvement in Arctic governance. Irish interest in the Arctic is growing due to the country's rich polar tradition and strong research base on oceanography, biodiversity, and climate change impact. There is a clear “gap in Ireland’s engagement in the Arctic, and successful stewarding of the Arctic is in Ireland’s best interest” (Cronin, 2021). Therefore, two research questions arise. Firstly, given Ireland’s experience as a proactive “global actor and bridge builder” (Government of Ireland, 2020) in the international arena, what role could it play, and what can it contribute to the Arctic? Secondly, as the Global Ireland multi-year Strategy to 2025 (Government of Ireland, 2023) comes to an end, should Ireland develop its Arctic regional Strategy? The main strategic Arctic themes for Ireland are ripe for exploration.
