Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS)

Indigenous Knowledge is a body of observations, oral and written knowledge, innovations, practices, and beliefs developed by Tribes and Indigenous Peoples through interaction and experience with the environment.11 It is applied to phenomena across biological, physical, social, cultural, and spiritual systems.12 Indigenous Knowledge can be developed over millennia, continues to develop, and includes understanding based on evidence acquired through direct contact with the environment and long-term experiences, as well as extensive observations, lessons, and skills passed from generation to generation.

Developing a Framework for Integrating IKS in Technology Education with Sustainable Development Prin

Education is critical in fostering sustainable development (SD) in a world that faces many environmental problems. The integration of indigenous knowledge systems (IKS) in technology education (TE) can enhance the realisation of SD goals. However, teachers’ views on the integration of IKS in teaching technology towards education on sustainable development (ESD) seem to show some gaps.

A Critical Approach to the Study of Oral Narratives

A Critical Approach to the Study of Oral Narratives

Oral narratives are synonymous to folktales, which are stories told by the common people. These stories are passed down from one generation to the other through words of mouth and they are often called folk narratives or folk stories. Folktales come in different varieties and they are also culture specific.

Traditional Knowledge Systems (TKS)

Traditional knowledge is a collection of skills, practices, and knowledge that is passed down through generations within a community. It is often a key part of a community's cultural or spiritual identity.

Traditional knowledge can include:

  • Folklore: Expressions of folklore in the form of music, dance, song, handicraft, and designs

  • Technology: Tools and techniques for hunting, agriculture, and other subsistence activities

  • Medicine: Traditional medicine practices

  • Ecology: Ecological knowledge and ethnobotany

  • Astronomy: Ethnoastronomy and celestial navigation

  • Climate: Knowledge about climate

Traditional knowledge is often passed down orally by elders, making it mainly subjective and qualitative. This differs from Western science, which is based on academic and literate transmission and is objective and quantitative.

Traditional knowledge is important in making a country more developed. It can be used to forward think, while still keeping one's feet firmly planted in the past.

Welsh Music Artist Ren Gill

"Music is like a big, colourful quilt made up of all sorts of genres, but it takes someone special to stitch those different styles together seamlessly. That’s exactly what Welsh Singer-songwriter Ren is doing! Ren’s story is a mix of health issues and musical therapy. After being misdiagnosed with everything from depression to chronic fatigue syndrome, he finally found out he had autoimmune issues, including Lyme disease and brain damage. This was a game-changer for him. Instead of backing down, he turned his struggles into powerful music that speaks to his journey.

HE MAKES HIS OWN WAY

Ren summed up his intentions for the song on Facebook, “When you put in monumental levels of effort doing self work, stress reduction techniques, CBT, self affirmations, following strict medication regimes with pills with a long list of side effects, and end up worse it’s a really defeating and confusing place to be because it contradicts everything we’ve been taught. It shakes your trust in the medical system.”

We call on the stars the rivers and trees, we learn from the mountains, the birds and the bees, we gather this sangha our roots grow down deep, beneath the surface beyond our beliefs. We can come home children don’t be afraid, life is your teacher so don’t run away, stay wild and free raise your hands up and pray, this is our moment there’s only today. Hey mamacita show us the way, we’ll no longer hide from the shadows and pain, we are alive, we are awake, we are the open and this is our faith. • Tierra, mi cuerpo Agua, mi sangre Aire, mi aliento Y fuego, mi espíritu • I feel the Earth beneath my feet I feel the life, within her leaves I feel her song, in the rain that falls I feel the warmth in her heart that calls • Hey Mama Hey Mama Hey

What is Self Determination Theory?

Join us at http://www.campstompingground.com this summer for a camp entirely built around these ideals. An excerpt from the opening keynote at The Self-Determination Theory Conference 2013 by Richard Ryan. Animation by Laura Kriegel www.batfishcreations.com Research by psychologists Richard Ryan, PhD, and Edward Deci, PhD, on Self-Determination Theory indicates that intrinsic motivation... flourishes in contexts that satisfy human needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness. -American Psychological Association, July 21, 2004 Our 3 basic needs are autonomy, competence, and relatedness We have heard somethings about them today but I’m just going to briefly say what they are Relatedness For us relatedness is feeling cared for and connected to others It has to do with a sense of belonging A feeling that you matter to the other people that are there And relatedness is enhanced not just by people treating you warming and including you but its also enhanced by your giving to them and your being able to matter in their lives Thats part of what helps us feel connected. So its not a one way street in relatedness it has to do with both and again we will show evidence to that effect Competence Competence is really commonly studied in psycology. Most theories of psychology would probably agree with us on this one point which is competence is essential to wellness to feel effective in your environment, to have some sense of mastery of the things that are important to you very very important And environments can have a big impact on that experience Autonomy And finally relatedness I mean autonomy which as probably been the most controversial but also the most central of all our psychological needs in the sense of research and our integrated mission so to speak Autonomy refers to behavior that is self endorsed That you agree with and find congruent with in yourself And so autonomy here means you feel choice full self initiating And when you’re fully autonomous you’re whole heartedly behind the thing that you are doing And again because of that whole heartedness thats why performance tends to be better when you’re acting out of autonomous motives
